    Alcohol and Drug Services - Yukon Health and Social Services

    Description::

    Alcohol and Drug Services offers addiction prevention, education and counseling/treatment services to students in grades 5 to 12 in Whitehorse schools.

    The Youth Addiction Counselors offer partnerships with community youth organizations to provide counseling, training and capacity building.

    Alcoholics Anonymous, Alanon, Alateen

    Description:

    Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

    Alateen includes young Al-Anon members, whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking.

    Anger Management

    Description::

    The Anger Management program uses an educational treatment approach to equip young people with the skills needed to manage anger and other emotions associated with aggression and anti-social behaviour. 

    The program involves ten 1.5 hour sessions and there is a pre-intake assessment for each participant.

    Blood Ties Four Directions Centre

    Description::

    Providing support and education for individuals, families, agencies and communities in relation to HIV/AIDS and HEPATITIS C.

    Child Abuse Treatment Services (CATS)

    Description::

    CATS provides workshops, consultations, training and counseling in Whitehorse and in the communities.

    Individual, family and group counseling is available for children who have been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused, including children who have witnessed family violence.

    The unit is staffed by one supervisor, a full-time intake worker, and five full counselors. Confidentiality is a priority.

    Gay and Lesbian Alliance Yukon (GALA)

    Description::

    GALA Yukon strives to establish and maintain a social, recreational, educational and political outlet for the gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender, multicultural community.

    Les EssentiElles

    Description::

    Les EssentiElles was created to promote solidarity between French, English and First Nations women, as well as with other Yukon and national organizations, in order to improve all women's conditions and to break the isolation faced by French women living in a minority setting.

    Residential Youth Treatment Services (RYTS)

    Description::

    RYTS provides both short-term care for children at the Children’s Receiving Home and long-term, group home care.

    Children’s Receiving Home
    The Children’s Receiving Home provides short-term placements for children, 12 to 18 years old, in need of a place of safety. It also provides supervised visits for families, stabilization and short-term care. Referrals are from Family and Children's Services.

    Group homes
    Children in care of the director may be referred to the RYTS program by Family and Children’s Services through the Placements Review Committee. RYTS operates four homes, which provide programming for behaviourally difficult youth between 10 and 18 years of age and their families.

    RespectED

    Description::

    A violence and abuse prevention program from the Canadian Red Cross that addresses issues surrounding:

    Victoria Faulkner Women's Centre

    Description::

    If you're going through a tough time and need a woman's hand or just need information on women's issues, pay the Victoria Faulkner Women's Centre (VFWC) a visit. Use the phone, internet, laundry or shower, or stop by for Wednesday's "Community Kitchen".

    Moms and soon-to-be moms can access prenatal programming, recreational programs for moms and kids, attend talks or participate in workshops.  A suite is available for pregnant women from the rural communities.

    VFWC is always looking for young women who want to get involved. If you would like to volunteer, you will have the opportunity to help during drop-in hours, find out how the collective works, assist the summer student (or be VFWC's summer student!) or even start your own new program - the Centre belongs to you!

    Whole Child Program

    Description::

    The Whole Child Program (WCP) offers a wide variety of programs & activities to support families in Whitehorse. 

    The program provides a number of support services for families during weekdays including the family resource area, a community coordinator and an outreach worker.

    Every Wednesday, WCP hosts WCP Night with services and activities including:

    • open gym and computer lab

    • monthly swim nights for the whole family with free transportation for downtown families
