    For youth ages 12- 18. This is a cost-free program aimed at citizenship, physical fitness, and leadership skills. Kids get paid to go to camp.

    B.Y.T.E.

    Description::

    Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE) is a youth-directed and youth-focused organization that delivers a variety of skill-building activities and workshops for youth in Whitehorse and in rural Yukon communities.

    BYTE strives to be socially, ecologically, and ethically responsible to the greater Yukon community. BYTE attempts to create healthy communities where youth voices are heard and creative potential has space for expression.

    The programming is targeted toward youth aged 12 and up.

    Description::

    Scouts offer fun and exciting programming for youth ages 5-26 in Yukon. Young people enjoy Scouts Canada’s programs, which are provided by caring and dedicated volunteers. Registration accepted all year long, space permitting.

    Skookum Jim Friendship Centre

    Description::

    The Skookum Jim Friendship Centre is a community house committed to bettering the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical well-being of First Nation peoples.  We promote friendship and understanding between all people.

    The Prenatal Nutrition Outreach Program promotes and supports the health of all women during their pregnancies, and supports nursing mothers and their babies up to the age of one year.  There are weekly drop-in sessions for participants.

    The Traditional Parenting Program teaches parenting practices and values to First Nations people through the knowledge of the elders.

    The Tan Sakwathan Youth Diversion Program uses a holistic approach to provide early intervention and healthier alternatives for First Nation youth and their families who come in conflict with the law.  This program aims to assist these families to live happy, productive lives.  The program uses elders, guest speakers, traditional teachings, workshops, referrals, psychologists, community involvement and health recreational activities, as needed.

    The Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centre (UMAYC) was designed to provide urban aboriginal youth with a wide range of culturally based programs, services and activities that are locally controlled and designed in conjunction with aboriginal youth.  These programs are structured to empower youth to face challenges and determine their own future with a sense of pride in a culturally relevant environment.

    The After-School Sports Program offers recreational activities such as floor hockey, basketball, handball, dodgeball, indoor soccer, lacrosse, Inuit Games, Dene Games, etc. for youth between the ages of 8-14. Activities are held at Elijah Smith, Jack Hulland, Takhini and Selkirk schools Monday to Thursday.

    The Student Training and Financial Services Program includes work-life job skills, Northwest Territories post-secondary education, Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) National Child Benefit Fund, and the Aboriginal Human Resource Development Program.

    The After School Tutoring Program provides one-on-one tutoring, daily homework sessions, studying tips and tools to increase academic confidence, as well as resource materials for students applying to post-secondary institutions.

    The Youth Advisory Council is involved with program planning, development and delivery of all UMAYC programs.  The Council is comprised of eight youth between the ages of 15 and 24, though youth outside the age range may still be considered.

    SunDog Carving Studio & Gallery

    Description::

    The Sundog Carving Program is increasing development of the Yukon First Nation arts and culture sector, reinforcing positive role-modeling and providing cultural opportunities for Yukon First Nation youth. The program is creating a more dynamic Yukon First Nation presence on the local and national arts scene.

    Carvers have an opportunity to increase their fine arts skills and range of artwork such as masks, prints, panels, plaques, rattles, paddles and bowls, among other items.

    The Sundog Carvers’ art has been sold locally, nationally and internationally. Beginner pieces sell in the $25-$125 range, and advanced carvers sell their work for $1,000 - $5,000, depending on size and complexity.

    Description::

    UMAYC of the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre provides urban aboriginal youth the opportunity for growth, empowerment, skill development and cultural enhancement. The program focuses on traditional and contemporary programs that meet the needs of youth between the ages of 10-29 years old.
